Picture Perfect

A picture paints a thousand words, but when it comes to publishing pictures ebooks there are a multitude of file formats and conversion practices to consider. One of illustrated publishers required an automated process to take high volumes of photographs, which were in a variety of file formats from TIFFs to JPGs and PNGs and a variety of sizes and DPI (dots per inch). Print publishing rests on the principle of using images that are 300 dpi, while digital often rests on 72 dpi, as less dots per inch are required to give clarity to an image on screen. The reality of images collected from a variety of sources is often in between.

At Medlar we pride ourselves on our innovative approach to time consuming problems. We developed a coding script that would automatically input the publishers images and output them as TIFF files that were also sized and rotated to the right orientation for digital publishing. It’s essential to optimise all files for digital publishing, especially if you are going to end up paying additional fees because your files are large and taking up extra server space at your vendor’s website.

We reduced the time spent on image processing by 75% versus manual correction. A considerable saving for our client and a new method of streamlining high volume image work. Batch conversion is just one innovative way we help our clients. Contact us to find out how we can help increase efficiency and lower costs with you publishing projects.
